Marlou Rutten is an artist and designer based in Amsterdam. She developed her interests during the bachelor's degree in Product Design at ArtEZ in Arnhem, where she graduated in 2017. Since then she has developed a coherent body of work characterized by autonomous products and objects.

Marlou explores the tactile value of the invisible that goes unnoticed by our senses. By creating objects that translate and register natural phenomena in unconventional ways, she tries to broaden the experience of our sensory perception. There is an inseparable relation between her work and the context in which it is experienced. Marlou's work exists, creates, and becomes redefined by its actual surrounding. Characteristic of her work is the refined aesthetics, the poetic value and the same rigorous attention to shape, material and color.

As a designer she is interested in the dialog between craft, industry, object and user. She further developed her position as a designer during her work experiences at Studio Formafantasma. She has gained knowledge of both industrial and craft processes and acquired an interdisciplinary work approach.

		<description>Jakari &#124; 2023
Jakari exists at the intersection of textile and light design. It’s innovative woven paper textile is crafted with a jacquard weaving machine. The lamp is driven by the interplay between sculptural and functional design and embodies a material gesture that represents a fusion of the two distinct disciplines.

The curves and folds of the artwork suggest a continuous flow, as if the material itself is still in the process of becoming, frozen in a fleeting moment before its next metamorphosis. The lamp seems to inhabit a liminal realm where matter is neither solid nor liquid, but a delicate balance between familiar physical states.

		<description>Obovaal &#124; 2021
Obovaal is a sculptural work that works according to the principle of a camera obscura. It is a memorial to the painter Caspar van Wittel, who used the camera obscura during the production of his paintings.

The nickname of the 17th century painter Caspar van Wittel was "Gaspare degli Occhiali", Caspar with the glasses. He owes this nickname to his unmistakable eye for detail with which he registered his surroundings. The camera obscura played an important role, as Van Wittel used it as an instrument to frame and highlight elements of cityscapes during painting.

To celebrate Van Wittel's legacy, Obovaal gives the viewer an insight into his working method. The sculpture is a life-size camera obscura pointed at the Koppelpoort in Van Wittel's birthplace Amersfoort. By displaying a live representation of reality upside down, the illusion of a living painting is created. The picture shown will never be the same again because reality is constantly changing.

<description>Time only exists so not everythins happens at once &#124; 2017
Similar to our senses, media like photography translate incoming pulses
into a visual
representation. Normally a photograph is equivalent to what we
consider as reality. Our reality is subjected to several parameters like time
and scale. When one of these parameters change, the same reality appears
different. This is shown in Time Only Exists So Not Everything Happens At Once. Time observation is extended, therefore the exposed silk visualises
another possible form of reality. Contrary to a conventional photograph wherein
time is identical to our perception of time.

By looking how I could make the invisible visible and the unknown parts
of reality more tangible, I created an instrument that captures the intensity
of the solar cycle.

The light sensitive treated silk moves slowly from one axis to the
other. During this process the UV-light is being captured on the exposed tensed
fabric. You can see this instrument as an enlarged version of a film that turns
through a camera. The result of a day shows a piece of 240 cm exposed silk. All
the changes in the weather and different intensity of the sun are visualized in
the blue tones.

Tangible Matter &#124; 2018
Inspired by the tradition of miners who brought a
canary into the coalmines to detect toxic gasses which are intangible for
humans to sense, Tangible Matter functions as a
measuring tool for the amount of 4G that is ambient in the air.

Nowadays, there is a regular amount of radiation in the air. Comparable
to the toxic gasses in the mines, this is something that we as humans cannot
sense. Due to the increasing impact of technological devices on our physical
environment, the amount of electromagnetic fields is only becoming more and
stronger. Therefore, comparable to the canary, the instrument detects the intangible
and maybe even harmful, and makes it visible. The stronger the signal that is measured,
the faster the pointer turns.

		<description>The Weather Archive &#124; 2017

The Weather Archive is the result of an experiment with light sensitive chemicals and temperature.
Every day I exposed an Instax Polaroid to the temperature varieties of that
day. Every polaroid is different in colour and pattern subsequently of the
differences in climate.

Blueprints consists of a series blouses with unique prints. Every print is created by the blouse’s wearer. By threating the fabric with uv-sensitive material, the way the shirt is worn leaves a blueprint.
